On our first day at Cardigan we pulled into the AMC Lodge at about 10:30 in the morning. When we got there we were greeted by all of the people who work there. We then played some games in a field by the lodge, which were really fun. Some of the games we played were Alaskan Baseball, The North Wind Blows, and Captain’s Coming. After those games we ate lunch in front of the lodge. Everyone ate their lunch pretty fast, because we couldn’t wait to get into our rooms. We all rushed upstairs and unpacked. My roommates were Tate, Jack, and Patrick. We unloaded our bags and packed our backpacks for hiking. We then went outside in our hiking gear and met up with our hiking groups.

When we met with our group leaders we sat on the grass and sketched the lodge. After that we distributed snacks and gear for hiking, and decided who would carry what. Then we set out for our first hike of the trip.

When we started our hike in the woods we immediately saw a Hawthorn tree. We examined the leaves closely and then sketched them out. Later while we were walking through the woods we saw a Maple and Hemlock, twisting around each other into the sky. It was really cool! After that we saw a large whole in the ground, with some stone pillars embedded in the dirt. The AMC workers told us that it was the ruins of an old cellar. Getting further into the woods we all thought about what it meant to be a scientist, and what some characteristics of a scientist might be. After we descended a small hill, we saw a vast creek, the only thing between us and our final destination. We also saw a large, interesting looking tree, with a huge mushroom growth on its bark. It was so strange, and we sketched it in our notebooks. After seeing the beautiful tree, we walked farther down the hill to the stream. There we examined certain things by the stream that we found interesting. I examined some mushrooms growing together in a large patch. Then we crossed the stream by hopping across rocks, and finally set out for the falls! We ascended up a large hill and crawled through a cave to get a good view of the falls. It was so beautiful! We sketched it out too, and Garret, one of the group leaders, dropped his papers into the falls.

There were many regions at our woods hike. Regions is a theme of geography. One of the regions there was the woods at the beginning of the hike. This region was full of different species of trees. Then there were a bunch of bare trees on a dirt hill. This region was nice and cool in the shade. And flowing out of that region was another region, the one with the stream, where we studied mushrooms. And not so far from that is the falls is the final region , at our destination.

When we got back from our small hike we had a little break, and then ate dinner. For dinner we had spaghetti, and it was pretty good. Then we went outside and went on a nightwalk. We played games, watched stars, learned owl calls, and a whole bunch of stuff. It was amazing. After that we went into a story time in the living room, and I fell asleep IMMEDIATELY. I was so tired. Afterwards, I barely trudged up the steps and went to bed.
